Abstract text: The objectives of the study consist in discovering the congenital urological malformations through ultrasound exam in order to precociously adopt the right therapeutic attitude. A number of 428 newborns were examined by ultrasound, using an ultrasound device with a 5.5 MHz probe, by the neonatologists of “Dr. Salvator Vuia” Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Arad, Neonatology Department during 2008: 240 of them being boys (56.07%) and 188 girls (43.93%), urological malformations being discovered among 38 of them, with an incidence of 88.79‰ newborns/year. Hydronephrosis was found in 23 cases (60.53% of those with malformations), with an incidence of 53.74‰ newborns/year, while the non-hydronephrotic malformations were found in 15 cases (39.47% of those with malformations), with an incidence of 35.05‰ newborns/year. The relatively high incidence of these malformations justifies the introduction of a national screening program in order to avoid their long-term consequences, especially in the case of obstructive ones.
