Abstract Title: New developments in the prevention and treatment of age related macular degeneration

Abstract text: Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the modern world which benefitted over the last 10 years for new prevention, diagnosis methods and the identification of various factors that led to the development of the disease. Also new treatments have been recognized that slowed down the disease progression and so preserved a good vision. Recent discoveries have found predisposing genes but also inflammatory and immunological factors who can be modified trough a good prevention and an proper treatment. New means of diagnosis such as angiofluorography with iodcyanine, OCT (optical coherence tomography) and eye fundus photography have been used for early detection of the disease. This review presents new developments in the prevention and treatment of AMD (nutrition rich in lutein, zeexanthin, Ω-3 fatty acids, various complement genes, treatment for advance forms of AMD with laser photocoagulation, intravitreean injections with anti VEGF factors (Ranibizumab, Avastin).
