Abstract text: Alcohol consumption in various forms of commercial presentation is an important aspect of lifestyle at community level. The presence of a population group with excessive alcohol consumption (≥ 20 U alcohol/week for men and ≥ 14 U alcohol in women) may be associated with important cardiovascular risk factor. We studied the prevalence of excessive drinking in a significant group of people (1530 adults), finding that excessive consumption of 8.18% in people, with a significantly increased prevalence in men – 14.16%, also with prevalence that depends on the professional background (22.26% to builders). The population with excess alcohol intake has increased overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 25kg / m) prevalence, at 55.80%, and also 8.21% underweight patients. The presence of a high prevalence of smoking (60.20%) was also found among this population (45.40% in women and 78.40% in men). Association of other cardiovascular risk factors (such as hypertension, high cholesterol, fasting triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, increased atherogenic index) in these patients, increases the cardiovascular risk to these very vulnerable people. This rather complex medico-social problem requires the primary care physician’s involvement in activities to combat and reduce the excessive consumption of alcohol, but also to identify and prioritize other cardiovascular risk factors participating in these subjects, with specific measures of healthcare: primary prevention programs and secondary prevention activities (appropriate treatment of risk factors requiring therapeutic intervention). Independent of the cardiovascular risk, patients with excessive alcohol consumption raise issues of digestive pathology, and risk of neurological, psychiatric, oncological conditions, and also represent a great social problem.
