Abstract text: Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common malignancy among women, ranking after breast, lung, and colon cancer. Women have an approximately one in forty lifetime risk of being diagnosed with uterine cancer. The majority are stage I at diagnosis as most women present with postmenopausal bleeding. Ninety-five percent of uterine carcinomas arise from endometrial glands and are called as carcinomas, the remaining 5% of cases being sarcomas. The median age of diagnosis for endometrial cancer is 63 years and most patients are postmenopausal. The purpose of this study is to examine the frequency of uterine cancer in our hospital during the 2004-2008 period, the data being collected from the Histopathology Exams (HPE) registers. During the 2004-2008 period, 42,038 patients were admitted in our hospital and 7.997 HPE were performed (19.02% of all patients). Uterine cancer was discovered in 177 cases (2.21% of all HPEs). Most cases (165 or 93.22%) were represented by carcinomas, nine patients (5.08%) had sarcomas and there were also three cases of carcinoma combined with sarcoma (1.70%). The mean age of the group was 62.15±8.63 years. Uterine cancer, although less aggressive, still remains a serious public health issue in Romania as many cases are discovered too late.
