Abstract text: Background. The etiologic diagnosis of chronic conjunctivitis is often difficult to establish because a multitude of mechanism are implicated (allergic, infectious, toxic, dry eye syndrome). Recognition of these mechanisms requires adequate treatment. Observing and measuring IgE tear dosage allows us to establish the exact and precise nature of chronic conjunctivitis that is inflammatory or allergic. Method. IgE tear dosage was measured in 88 patients with chronic conjunctivitis. 42 patients presented clinical signs of allergic conjunctivitis and 36 patients had chronic unspecific conjunctivitis without having any personal and family history of allergy or dry eye syndrome. 10 patients had dry eye syndrome confirmed with Schirmer test and tears breakup time of 1. Results. IgE tear dosage has proved to be a of high value in 28 from a total of 42 patients with chronic conjunctivitis who also had allergic family history(66%). 9(20,5%) patients from a total of 36 patients with chronic unspecific conjunctivitis presented a high level of Ige in tear dosage. Only 3 patients(20,5%) from a total 10 patients with dry eye syndrome had a high level of IgE in tear dosage. Conclusions. When dealing with a case of chronic unspecific conjunctivitis who can also be allergic, IgE tear dosage confirms the precise diagnosis. It is important to correlate the results from IgE tear dosage with the clinical signs of chronic conjunctivitis and also with different inflammatory markers of allergies.
