Abstract text: This paper presents a study on the effect of fenugreek seeds powder (Trigonella foenum graecum) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in experimental alcohol toxicity in rats. We used a 60 days feeding with alcohol. This resulted in a significant increase in the activity of serum aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase. We observed that the levels of serum lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid were also significantly elevated. These substances are reactive substances in liver and brain. The results show also in liver and brain, significantly lower activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase associated with depletion in glutathione and ascorbic acid concentrations. The activity of Ca2+-ATPase in brain was significantly lowered. Administration of fenugreek seeds powder with alcohol prevented the enzymatic depletion and the increase in lipid peroxidation and enhanced the antioxidant potential. The seeds exhibited appreciable antioxidant property in vitro. The anatomo-pathological examination of the liver and brain revealed a significant protection against alcohol toxicity.
