Abstract text: Background: Renal congenital anomalies are a very important section in congenital morbidity of the newborns, because both of their frequency and of their unfavorable evolution. In our maternity exists an ultrasound renal screening program to all the newborns in order to find the renal congenital anomalies in early stages and, also, exists a follow-up program to prevent the complications like urinary tract infections, reflux nephropathy, hyperarterial pressure, or progressive chronic renal failure. Aim: The authors present a case report of a newborn with congenital severe hydronephrosis, early diagnosed. Material and Method: Case report, with clinical and paraclinical presentation and images from personal collection: male, normal body weight, 38 weeks gestational age- the antenatal ultrasound suggests a renal abnormality. The early renal ultrasound after the delivery, established the diagnosis: severe renal congenital right hydronephrosis. After the stabilization in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the newborn was transferred in the surgical department. After the surgical intervention, the kidney is preserved. Conclusions: 1. Early diagnosis of this renal congenital anomaly, has prevented the severe complications; 2. The interdisciplinary collaboration between the medical departments was very important in the evolution of this case; 3. Many renal abnormalities are later diagnosed, frequently with the discover of the first complications. This case report emphasis the importance of the renal ultrasound screening for congenital abnormalities in early neonatal period.
