Abstract text: In order to achieve the „acquis” of the European Community in the field of the Environment Protection – that includes also the management of the medical wastes – the first step that Romania had to make was the legislative alignment to the standard specifications of the European Union. This study has as purpose the evaluation of the quantities of the wastes resulted from the medical activity in Arad County. The risks represented by the medical wastes are due to the fact that they contain infectious agents, they are genotoxic, they may contain toxic chemical or pharmaceutical products and they may be radioactive and may present a stinging-cutting character. Meanwhile, the risks generated by the medical wastes are represented by the possibility of contacting the virus of hepatitis B or C, or of HIV. All the persons that come in touch with the dangerous medical wastes present a potential risk of turning up ill. The first persons who are exposed, are the ones who work in the sanitary services which produce medical wastes. Apart from them, there are also other persons who are exposed, such as those who manipulate these wastes, or those who come in touch with them as a result of a bad administration. The chemical pharmaceutical wastes cast through the sanitation system may have toxic effects on the ecosystems of waters in which they are slopped. Taking into account that the majority of dangerous wastes resulted from the medical activity are generated by the use of medical materials and devices of single use, the orientation towards reusable medical devices leads to the drop of the costs with their administration.
