Abstract text: Propolis is a resinous mixture that bees (Apis mellifera) collect from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. Propolis is known today as one of the most striking natural products. It has many biological activities and therapeutic effects. Among the therapeutic actions can be mentioned: antimicrobial, antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor and antioxidant action.
The study presents the analysis of polyphenols, including flavonoids in methanolic extracts of fresh foliar buds and in propolis, using the HPLC technique. The content in polyphenolic compounds of Propolis (mg/100 g) was analyzed for both hydrolyzed and a non-hydrolyzed samples. Nineteen of the most spread chemical compounds found in plant extracts have been used as standards. The experiment was carried out using an Agilent 1100 HPLC Series system (Agilent, USA) equipped with degasser G1322A, quaternary gradient pump G1311A, autosampler G 1311A. For the separation, a reverse-phase analytical column was employed (Zorbax SB-C18 100 x 3.0 mm i.d., 3.5 μm particle); the temperature was set to 48°C. The detection of the compounds was performed using a G1316A UV detector at 330 nm (until 17 min) and 370 nm (from 17 min until 35 min). The chromatographic data were processed using a ChemStation software from Agilent, USA. The conclusion of this study is that: eight compounds have been found in the Populus nigra foliar buds extracts: caftaric acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol and apigenin in the non-hydrolyzed samples and 7 compounds: caftaric acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, luteolin, kaempferol and apigenin in the hydrolyzed samples. The Propolis extract has presented five polyphenolic compounds: caftaric acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid and sinapic acid in the non-hydrolyzed samples, and in the hydrolyzed sample.
