Abstract text: Just like other dentistry procedures, endodontic treatments can fail. These failures occur frequently, recommencing treatments being a major component of several endodontic practices. Re-treating after a failed endodontic treatment can sometimes be an extremely complex process, which requires a great deal of time and also adequate technical equipment. Re-treating can be done through non-surgical or surgical procedure, or by combining both versions. The prognosis of recommencing treatment must be evaluated carefully, taking into consideration alternative treatments and their possible advantages. It is very important to identify the probable cause of the failure, prior to recommencing treatment, with the purpose of designing an adequate treatment scheme. Though numerous studies on the prognosis have been published, by analyzing the effects of various factors on the success and failure, many variables render the interpretation of results difficult. These difficulties include the subjectivity of the observer (with different criteria of success); subjectivity in interpreting X-ray pictures; variable levels of compliance of the patient (control); subjectivity of the patient`s response; variability of the host`s response to therapy; relative validity and reproducibility of the method of evaluation; the possibility of control on certain variables such as the size of groups and the differences between periods of observation. Lately there has been an increased interest in endodontic re-treatment, and this will surely grow in the future due to the increasing necessity to conserve teeth, including those in which endodontic treatment has failed.
