Abstract text: | Introduction. Adiponectin is a circulating hormone predominantly secreted from adipose tissue, having 247 aminoacids in its structure and a molecular weight of 30 kDa, and low circulating level have associated with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It is present in human circulation in high levels (5-30μg/ml) accounting for 0.01% of plasma proteins. Dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes is characterized by increased plasma triglycerides and decreased HDL cholesterol. Obesity is the chief risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, and 80 to 90% of people with this disorder are overweight or obese. Materials and methods: We studied 80 subjects aged 40-60 years (60 patients with type 2 diabetes and 20 non-diabetes controls). We analyzed the relationship between adiponectin, total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol. The ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) methods were used for measuring adiponectin. Results: It was observed a decrease in the adiponectin values, as there was an increase in the BMI value, especially in patients with android obesity and old diabetes. Plasma adiponectin is negatively correlated with total-cholesterol and triglycerides, and positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol. Conclusion: The negatively correlated between plasma adiponectin and serum triglycerides, suggest that low adiponectin concentrations are associated with risk factors for aterosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. |
