Abstract text: | Venous disease is frequently encountered in 30-50% of adults and is characterized by superficial venous insufficiency of lower limb system that is evolving in chronic venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is the most common disorder of the venous system, and is usually manifested as spider veins or varicose veins. Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and tortuous. A variety of treatments are used depending on the patient’s particular type and pattern of veins and on the physician’s preferences. Treatment can include radiofrequency ablation, vein stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy, foam sclerotherapy, lasers, or compression. The untreated venous disease evolves to complications which lower the individual’s quality of life: thrombophlebitis, dermopathy, varicose ulcer, spontaneous rupture of varicose veins. Postphlebitic syndrome is venous insufficiency that develops following deep vein thrombosis. Linton’s procedure for venous ulcer represents the ligation of the perforating vein under the limb fascia. It can be performed open, either endoscopicaly. The Surgical Clinic of the Arad City Hospital performed 56 interventions in past 5 years for superficial varicose veins complicated by thrombophlebitis, skin conditions and venous ulcers, representing 25.4 % of the total 220 cases admitted, in other 4 cases the treatment was conservative. Evolution was favorable and we recommend early surgical treatment avoiding the later complications. |
