Abstract text: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is one of the most common disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It causes inflammatory injuries in the gastric or duodenal mucosa, with extension beyond the submucosa into the muscularis mucosa. The etiologies of this condition are multifactorial and are rarely related simply to excessive acid secretion. Even though gastric ulcer is a common disease, a diagnosis can be difficult because it has a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, ranging from asymptomatic to vague epigastric pain, nausea, and iron-deficiency anemia to acute life-threatening hemorrhage. The two major etiological factors for PUD are Helicobacter pylori and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) consumption. The global prevalence (active, scarred and operated ulcer) is 10% of the population. The purpose of this study it is to assess the location, the evolution and incidence of patients with PUD. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study has been made on 146 patients , admitted in Arad Clinical Hospital between April 2009-April 2010. These patients were diagnosed using endoscopic criteria. Results and Conclusions: It was found a higher incidence in males which is 60 percent, compared with females which is 40 percent; also there was a higher incidence in the age group between 50 and 60 years.
