| Abstract text: | Method: A retrospective, randomized study of 63 patients aged 65 years admitted in the Geriatric Department of “Dr. C.I. Parhon Hospital” during the period 01.01.2007 – 30.06.2007 for chronic renal disease (CRD) was conducted. We analyzed the association between onset of cognitive impairment and method of treatment of CRD (dialysis versus conservative treatment) in elderly patients. Our 63 patients were divided in two groups: 29 patients were hospitalized in the Department of Geriatrics and followed conservative treatment (group I) and 34 were on chronic hemodialysis and were followed up in the Dialysis Department (group II). All patients were evaluated by the following tests: Mini Mental State Evaluation (MMSE), the Score of Depression in Geriatrics and Hachinski Ischemic Score. ASPSS 11.0 was used for all statistical calculations (p<0.05). Results: The mean age of group I was 73,2 ± 6,1 years and 69,8 ± 4,6 years for group II. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding weight, hemoglobin, glycaemia and cholesterol levels. There was a significant increase in cognitive deficiency (p = 0.01) in group II. We also found an important correlation between depression and hemoglobin (p = 0.04) and triglycerides’ level (p = 0.02). Conclusions: Cognitive impairment is more frequently encountered in elderly patients with CRD treated by dialysis than elderly patients treated with conservative methods. That situation could be due to the accelerated process of atherosclerosis, currently associated diseases (hypertension, diabetes mellitus) and high rate of depression. |
