Abstract text: Contraception and family planning has always been an important public health issue because of a multitude of medical, ethical and socio-economic issues. The Romanian contraception program offers contraceptive methods for free to several categories: students, people from rural areas and people without income. Statistical data from the registers of the Family Planning Department of the “Dr. Salvator Vuia” Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Arad for the April 1, 2005-March 31, 2010 period was collected and statistically analyzed. There were 3551.6 births/year and 965.2 voluntary abortions/year. A number of 2352 people sought a suitable contraception method during this period; in 2348 cases a specific method was prescribed and distributed for free, while four of them had contraindications and refused an alternative method. The methods prescribed were oral hormonal contraceptives or OC (1123 cases or 47.83%), condoms (768 case or 32.71%), intrauterine devices or IUDs (391 cases or 16.65%), and injectable hormonal contraceptives (66 cases or 2.81%). Most cases (31.80%) belonged to the 16-20 year age group, while 67.36% of the patients live in rural areas. The mean age of the study group was 25.95 years. Patients from rural areas had a higher mean age (27.63 versus 22.51 years). As for the different methods, OCs had the lowest mean age (22.71 years), while the highest (30.26 years) belonged to the users of IUDs. Patients lived predominantly in rural areas in the case of three of the four methods, the only exception being injectable hormonal contraception.
